3. Regeneration Plans for Newlyn Quarry
Mat stated that the working group have been trying to identify
what the main objections to
the regeneration plans for Newlyn Quarry might be.Several members
of our group
attended a recent site visit.A lengthy discussion took place concerning
the proposed
development. It was agreed that our Newlyn Quarry sub-group will
continue to work on
identifying the sustainability issues that need to be addressed
and considered.Crystal
would also be seconded onto the sub-group.The sub-group would
also undertake an in
depth analysis of alternative proposals for example whether there
would be any potential to
utilise the area as a nature reserve. It was asked whether the
MDL group still have any
quarrying rights (Karen to ascertain). The working group will draft
a letter of Sustainable
Penwith's proposed response this letter will be sent to the Chief
Planning Officer of Penwith
DC local councillors and our MP.
4. Working with the Co-Op
Crystal visited the Co-Op in Penzance to let them know about
Sustainable Penwith.The
manager told her that if we had given them a couple of months
notice he would have been
able to arrange a wonderful prisze for our raffle. He explained
that local Co-Ops ared
encouraged to get involved with local projects and that if we
get a good project idea
together they would be happy to help us.Crystal said that they
might be of help in getting
us office space and perhaps even would allow us to put up a sustainability
display board in
their shops.Karen said that perhaps they could also help us promote
FairTrade fortnight.
Justin stated that the Co-Op's application forms are very simple
and it might well be an idea
to come up with a project that will be suitable for funding.
5. Raffle Prizes
The prize winners were drawn at the meeting.Karen to check
with Penwith DC's reception
and ask if they can give out the prizes to prizewinners on receipt
of the winning ticket.
6. Open/Green Spaces
Sustainable Penwith put their suggested targets to the West
Cornwall Together
Environment,Heritage and Culture Subgroup, these suggested targets
are available on our
website. Most of our targets were reasonably popular it is still
early days but the sub-group
are making good progress with setting objectives and targets.
The Sustainable Trust have been asked to review our greenspace
targets.
At a recent meeting of the Resource Committee of Penwith District
Council it was agreed·that the piece of woodland and field
at Alverton would be leased to Penwith Environmental
Network to create a community woodland.
Crystal had spoken to Richard Marsh of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust
they have several sites
in Penwith and are very active in environmental conservation. He
told Crystal that there are
many areas in which we can work with the trust for example they
always need volunteers for
their Environmental Resource and Education Centre which is responsible
for reporting
wildlife deaths etc.they are also looking for a lot more local
ownership,and it would also
be good if we could see how we could tie in with their strategic
plan.
7. Tetrapak
Justin said that he has found a pulp mill in Scotland that
recycle Tetrapak containers,he has
freepost stickers however they are stopping the freepost service
soon.The easiest answer
is to avoid buying Tetrapak containers in the first place. For
more information contact
Justin.
8. Any other Business
Green Box Wheels Karen told the group that she had given
Matt Trevaskis a number of
sets of wheels which can be attached to the Green Box Kerbside
Boxes to assist those who
have difficulty in carrying their boxes. If you know of anyone
who may benefit from a set of
these wheels contact Matt.
Green Waste Collection Penwith District Council have stopped
their green waste skip
service because it was felt not to be utilised to its best capacity, and
was not felt to be good
value for money. It has instead started trialling a kerbside collection
of green waste early
indications are that this is proving to be very popular.
Weekend Workshop The workshop day for the 25 th September
was discussed.There
were general concerns about the amount/volume of work on the day
and that there was a
need for clarity with respect to the overview and aims of the
day.Crystal agreed to work on
this with Karen.
